Sabrina Lall, who campaigned for justice in the murder case of her sister Jessica Lall, passed away on Sunday evening from liver cirrhosis. “She had been in and out of the hospital because she was not feeling well. Her condition at home deteriorated yesterday, so we rushed her to the hospital. She died this evening, around 5:00 p.m,” Ranjith Lall, her older brother, informed PTI over the phone. Raj Kumar Gupta adapted Jessica and her tale for the big screen in the 2011 film No One Killed Jessica. In the film, Vidya Balan played Sabrina, while Rani Mukerji played journalist Meera Gaity.
Sabrina stated she was pleased by Vidya’s performance and that she didn’t attempt to be like her when the film was released ten years ago. “Vidya is a genius. However, I don’t believe she was attempting to imitate my personality in any way. No, we are nothing alike. However, the actress who plays Jessica has a lot in common with Jessica in terms of vivacity and joie de vivre. There’s a sequence of a candlelight vigil where Myra’s image looks just like Jessica in that picture we’ve seen of her in all the media,” she told a major newspaper.
Sabrina said, “Raj Kumar Gupta got a lot of things right. He has meticulously recreated nearly every aspect of the circumstances surrounding Jessica’s death. Even the phrases and interactions in the movie are based on my own experiences. Everyone, even my sister and cousins, was thinking, ‘My gosh, how did the filmmaker know all of this?'” she had remarked.
Jessica Lall was assassinated at a New Delhi restaurant in 1999. Manu Sharma, also known as Siddharth Vashisht, was charged with her murder. When he was originally acquitted by the court, it sparked a nationwide outcry, with individuals marching and protesting. On December 20, 2006, he was condemned to life in prison. He was freed from prison on June 2, 2020.
