Lata Mangeshkar Birthday Special: When Lata Mangeshkar Moved Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru To Tears
Lata Ji performed the song in front of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on January 27, 1963. It was written in memory of Indian soldiers who perished in the 1962 India-China War. When Lata Ji was given only a day’s notice and asked to sing Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon, she initially declared she couldn’t. Kavi Pradeep, the lyricist, insisted on it, and she accepted. Before her performance, she could only rehearse once.
According to The Indian Express, she made these comments in 2014 during a Mumbai event commemorating the 51st anniversary of Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon. Nehru Ji wanted to talk with Lata after the celebration ended. “At first, I was nervous, thinking I had made a blunder. When I met Panditji (Nehru), though, I noticed tears in his eyes. ‘Lata, tumne Aaj mujhe rula diya,’ she quoted him as saying.
Lata Ji has received numerous awards, including three National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the Bharat Ratna. PM Narendra Modi wished her well on Twitter as she turned 92. “Congratulations on your birthday respected Lata Didi. Her beautiful voice may be heard all around the world.
